Debbie,

Thanks for the comment!

It sounds like you've got a great business on your hands. If you have people lining up for a table, then you must be doing something right.

As for the wi-fi, I think your idea makes sense. During the lunch crush, turn off the router and when it dies down, fire it back up. As long as you have a little note explaining the policy, I don't think anyone will have a problem.

If I'm ever down in Columbia, I'll have to stop by for a cup!

This was a very interesting little story. I own a coffeehouse and plan on offering wi-fi after being open 4 years without it.I plan on offering it for free... but turning it off at lunch because of limited space. I mean people literally stand over others holding their baskets of food waiting for someone to get up. How do you think customers will feel about the limited times? Since you spend alot fo time in coffeehouses I would love your imput. By the way I like hanging out in caffiene some also. E-mail me with your thoughts... http://www.buckheadcoffeehouse.com

Heh... just typed "Outlet Rustling" into Google and came up with the story here:

Mike, I think you should really ask them about the policy in an "interview" way -- ask them how customers with laptops have related to the card and their motivations behind it. maybe tell them you're writing an article on nomads in coffee shops -- which you've already done.

Interestingly enough, in Germany, a guy was arrested for using the puliuc outlet in a train station -- can't recall the URL, but if you search you'll locate it on the web. My guess is with more and more laptops out there, it's inevitable that more outlets will start appearing and so will the surcharges.

Maybe we should go in together on coin operated outlet covers and sell them to coffee shops, etc. ;-)
