Building On Good Routines

BlocksA little over a month ago, I wrote about how I was turning over a new leaf. Since then, I’ve been doing the basics of what FlyLady.net talks about. I’m not doing anything fancy, I’m just doing the basics. However, I have been trying to build on the basics and expand ever so slowly in all aspects of my life. I may not be catching up on everything that I’m behind on as fast as I would like, but I’m building good habits and replacing bad ones. In the past, I would throw myself into a project to catch up and let everything else slide, thus I would be done with something I was behind on, but there’d be even more to do after the one fire was put out. These baby steps are tough to abide by, but I’m starting to see results, so I’m sticking to my guns. One baby step that feels like a huge step starts tomorrow – Holly and I are going to get healthy.

This idea all started with an episode of Rock Bodies on VH1 called From Flab To Fab. In a nutshell, they took 4 normal women and did a 3 month makeover by giving them a team of people to help them lose weight. They had a trainer, chef, the works. At the end they all had lost a ton of weight and I was quite impressed! The regimen had them working out twice a day for 5 days a week. They were restricted to 1350 calories a day and they burned 1000 a day. Given that I’m a bit extreme by nature, that type of grueling workout touched a nerve and I wanted to do the same thing.

Under The Tuscan Sun

Double JeopardyDirector: Audrey Wells
Writer(s): Frances Mayes (Book), Audrey Wells (Screenplay)
Category: Romantic Comedy
MPAA: PG-13
Runtime:
Country: USA
Language: English
Year: 2003
Tagline: Life offers you a thousand chances… all you have to do is take one.

Plot: Loosely based on Frances Mayes’s best-selling memoir of the same title, Diane Lane stars as Frances, a newly divorced American lawyer who heads for the Italian region of Tuscany to make limonita out of life’s lemons. Having just quit her high-pressure job and ended her heartbreaking marriage, she buys a decrepit-but-charming house in Cortona on impulse, rebuilding it piece by piece — and herself along with it.

Review: If you love Italy then go see this movie. If you like real and intelligent characters then go see this movie. If you hate romantic comedies then go see this movie.

I am not a huge fan of the romantic comedy genre. More often than not, a romantic comedy is nothing more than a few good looking people thrown together and saddled with a lousy script. That’s not to say that there aren’t notable exceptions, but for the most part they suck. Based on the previews for this movie, I didn’t have high hopes, however I did receive a free pass to watch a sneak preview for the movie, so how could I say no? 🙂

My Cobbled Computers

Broken ComputersThere is an old saying that cobblers children have no shoes. That holds true for just about any profession, including Information Technology. I have a lot of computers in my office, but they don’t all work properly, yet my client’s computers all work like a charm. This saying came to the forefront of my mind yesterday as I hacked my way through the computer disfunction in my office.

For starters, my wife needed to print something out and lo and behold something was screwed up on her machine and Office needed the CD in order to launch Word. I don’t know where my CD is at the moment, so she was screwed. While she was waiting for me to print what she needed, she made the comment that she often stays late at work because she hates using her computer at home. I can’t think of anything more awful for a computer geek to hear than that. Granted her PC was made from extra parts I had lying around and doesn’t even sport a cover. It’s just raw metal and wires, but still…

A Couple More Little Things

I know that I have waxed poetically enough regarding Movable Type and how easy and cool it is to tweak your weblog, but there’s a couple of new things that I did on mashby.com that I have to share with you.

Postcards From The Edge

I’m back in the saddle as it were . We returned from Destin last night and I was finally reunited with Gracie. I could swear that she has grown while we were gone.

Am I Mac Enough?

mac_daddy At least once a year I go through a phase where I get sick of Windows and Microsoft and have the urge to move to another operating system. Thanks to Mike Rohde’s article entitled Happy Mac OS X User, I’ve thinking about switching again. Let’s face it, Apple makes some great looking gear and I haven’t met a geek yet that didn’t drool over some piece of Mac hardware. So I’ve entered that phase again of looking to make the switch, but I have to ask myself if it’s worth it. Am I mac enough? 😉

The first stop on this technology journey was to visit the Apple Web Site to see just how much the hardware was going to cost. Apple does have some low end machines that might help me ease into the Mac world, such as the eMac, but I like to think of myself as a power user. That makes the G5 my only option, which starts at $2000. These prices are not that far off from what you might find a Windows machine for, but I don’t usually buy off the rack. For the last 6 or so years, I’ve always custom built my PC. I buy the parts that I want from discount online retailers and assemble the machine myself. When I upgrade, I salvage the parts from the old machine and purchase upgrades as needed. This allows me to upgrade for about $500. So the idea of having to pay full pop for a machine is a bit of a change for me. Why not just build my own Mac then? Well, I can’t. Apple won’t let me.

Kickin’ It At The Beach House

Each year my in-laws go to the Florida pan handle for a little vacation. I started tagging along when I started dating Holly 15 years ago and it’s become a yearly oddessy. This year we’ve returned to Destin Pointe and the Calypso Cottage, a two story, 4 bedroom, 3 bath house that makes going to the beach like you’re living large.

Automating Photoshop

It’s only natural that once you become familiar with something, you tend to get comfortable. When your comfortable with something you expect it to act a certain way and you get a bit complacent. That’s how I would describe my attitude towards PhotoShop.
