Top 10 Ways To Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly

A Lemming parachuting with an umbrella. The start of every new year makes us think of making a fresh start on various things in our lives. Perhaps you want to start a new diet, or maybe get a fresh start on your personal finances. Whatever the case, it’s this time of year that most people consider, and more importantly take on, getting a fresh start on things. Since I provide informal tech support for my friends and family, I thought it might be helpful if I published a “Top 10” list of do’s and don’ts on how to keep your computer running smoothly. My hope is that you’ll take this list to heart and implement these 10 steps as part of your New Year’s Resolutions. If you do, I assure you that you’ll be glad that you did.

Even if you have an IT department at work, most of us are on our own when it comes to managing our personal computers at home. There’s not a person with a PC I met this holiday season that didn’t say something negative about their personal computer. The most common complain is that it’s running slow. There’s a number of factors that contribute to the overall speed of your machine, but following the items on this list can go a long way in making sure that your PC is running as optimally as possible. So without any further ado…

Perhaps This Only Matters To Me

A 50's style image of a man pointing at a chart on the wallThere’s an old saying that goes, “There’s lies, damn lies, and then statistics.” Regardless of the addage, I still like looking at them from time-to-time, especially this time of year. Maybe it’s from all my days in marketing, but I like looking at charts and graphs and comparing results from one year to the next. So this year, since I now have enough data, I put together a little presentation to see how 2004 stacked up to 2003.

In looking over all the pretty bar and line graphs, a couple of interesting things poped out at me:

Total number of page views:
» Increased by 665%

Total number of unique visitors:
» Increased by 403%

Total number of articles posted:
» Decreased by -60%

So what does all this mean? Well, this means that readership of the site in 2004 increased six-fold, but I published half as much. :s

I’m A Coffee Snob

A cup of coffee with a bag of beans.I gently pour my coffee from my french press coffee maker into one of my favorite coffee cups. I let it cool for a few minutes and let the air permeate with the smell of freshly made coffee. I lift the cup to my lips and take a small sip to minimize burning my tongue if the coffee is still too hot. It’s not and the hot liquid easily slides past my taste buds and down my throat. Getting the full taste of today’s brew, I make a small grimace as the sound “Eh…” pops out my mouth. It’s then that I finally admit to myself – I’m a coffee snob.

From Humble Beginnings
That’s right, I admit it, I’m a bit of a coffee snob. I suppose it was always this way in some form or another. When I was younger and began drinking coffee, only Community Coffee would do. The difference between then and now is that back then (and still to this day), Community Coffee is considered the State coffee of Louisiana. It’s served everywhere and is a staple of the coffee diet in the deep south. So I really wasn’t being a snob per se, I was just going with the natural order of things.

Then came the coffee house boom of the 90’s, where Starbucks began popping up on every corner along with mom-and-pop shops and alternative chains. All of a sudden it seemed you weren’t cool if you didn’t frequent a store that specialized in coffee. Naturally, I stopped into near by Perks, since Starbucks hadn’t made it to Baton Rouge. It was there that I was introduced to such coffee drinks as Cappuccinos and Espressos. There was a whole world out there that I had yet to experience, so I sampled everything they had to offer.

The 2004 Resolution Year In Review

Father Time blowing a party horn. This past weekend began the new year – 2005. With a new year comes new promises. Promises that this year will be better than last year, so we make a long list of things that we plan on doing differently than the year before. I plan on making resolutions for 2004, just as I did last year, but before I do I thought it might behoove me to take a look back and see how I did with my 2004 resolutions.

Resolution #1: I Will Face Life Head On
Wow, was this broad enough? I didn’t go into a lot of detail in describing this in the weblog, but it was something that was very personal to me. I can’t say that I completed this resolution perfectly, but I’d say that 75% of the time, I did take the “bull by the horns” when it came to my life.

The biggest result of this resolution is that I made some pretty big changes with some of the projects that I was involved in. In that regard I was really successful. Some of the highlights include the following: InterPUG was all but shut down. NPUG now has an active Leadership Council and I’m now a co-host on the Computer Outlook radio show.

The Final Days Of The Bacchanal

The Bearitage BearAs with any new year, many of us will decide to turn over a new leaf. To make positive changes in our lives so that we will be happier and healthier and all that jazz. With the new year looming just around the corner, I too am planning on making resolutions to change certain habits that I currently have. One in particular is to get back on the South Beach Diet. My family went on the diet last year and it worked very well. 95% of the weight that I took off has stayed off. The diet was fairly easy to stick to and the food tasted good, however in today’s American culture, it’s easy to fall of the wagon.

Since the summer my diet has been a downward spiral into fast food and junk food. To be honest, it’s not that the food tasted any better. It’s not as if a Big Mac is a culinary delight, it’s just easier. When your day is stressful and you’re looking to cut a few corners to get through it, it’s just easier to eat at McDonald’s than it is to go home and cook.

On top of that there’s been the holidays. Spending the holidays in Nashville would be hard enough, but having the holidays in Louisiana is a whole other bailiwick. Every time we go to Baton Rouge, Holly and I graze from one side to the other. Holly and I have been to Baton Rouge three times over the past two months, so we’ve gone back in some cases for thirds. They say that food is life. If that is indeed the case, then life in southern Louisiana is good. Just to give you some idea of what I’ve had to eat over the past two months, here’s a quick run down.

Confessions Of A Sex Addict

Sex And The City - an HBO original series.I admit it, Holly and I are sex addicts. It came on so unexpectedly. At first it seemed like something we could handle, yet slowly but surely we found that we couldn’t get enough of it. Holly would come home from work and we’d lose ourselves for hours at a time. We would go to bed exhausted and wake up bleary eyed and find it hard to go to work. Yet like clockwork, Holly would come home and we’d do it all over again. Well that is until we ran out of episodes. What do you mean, “What am I talking about?” I’m talking about “Sex And The City“. What did YOU think I was talking about? 😉

I’ve been a member of NetFlix for just over a year now and I absolutely love it. It’s allowed me to watch The Sopranos, Six Feet Under and many other shows that I missed by not having HBO. Having been selfish for most of my rentals, I decided to start a series that I thought Holly would like – “Sex And The City”. During it’s heyday, it was quite a popular show, especially with women, so I figured it would be something Holly would enjoy.

Merry Christmas!

A quick post to wish everyone a very merry Christmas! In lieu of a proper Christmas card, here’s a picture Holly and I took in New York when we were there last weekend for her birthday.

White Christmas In Louisiana?

An alligator cooking in a snowstorm. It’s Christmas Eve and Holly and I came down to Baton Rouge, where we’re from, to visit with family and friends for the holidays. In years past when we’ve come down, this trip is also a bit of a refuge from the colder weather in Nashville. Not this year however. A cold front has been sweeping through the south bringing record cold temperatures. The last weather report I saw on television said that they expect Corpus Christi, Texas to get up to 4 inches of snow. Corpus Christy is near the Mexico border! I don’t know that we’ll get any snow, but thus far I have seen a small bit of sleet.

A Scam I Almost Fell For

Sherlock HolmesA few weeks ago I received an e-mail asking if I was interested in selling one of my domain names. I’ve sent e-mails like this for clients of mine from time-to-time, so I thought nothing of it. I almost deleted it, but decided to respond to it on a lark, just to see what would happen. What I discovered was that I was walking into a scam. So if you own any domain names of your own, I highly encourage you to read on.

Here’s the original e-mail that I received:

To: Michael Ashby [michael@ashbygroup.com]
From: Jan Schmidt [schmidt@warmesoft.com]
Date: 12/05/2004
Subject: flamingball.com for sale?

Hi,
Our company is interested in your domain name. Is it available for sale?

If it is available for sale please email me your asking price. (Please note that we are willing to buy only the domain name, not a web site)

In case you have no idea what price you should ask for, we recommend you to use free appraisal service at http://www.valdomains.com.

If our company can afford your domain I will contact you as soon as possible.

We run a software development company. We provide custom software development on different platforms (Unix, Windows, Apache etc). Selling and buying names is not our main business but we have done it quite long as a side business.

More information of our company: http://www.warmesoft.com

Best regards,

Jan Schmidt
Business Manager, Warmesoft

Seemed professional enough and on the surface quite valid. I went to the domain name Warmesoft.com and browsed it briefly. There wasn’t much there, but neither does my own corporate site. I’m always working on someone else’s and not my own, so it’s still “under construction” and has been for many years. Anyway, at this point, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, so I decided to respond.

Thank you for your interest in one of my domain names. I don’t have any plans to sell the domain, however I would entertain an offer. You never know, it may just be too good to pass up.
