Tweak City

WrenchesI just can’t seem to leave well enough alone. Every morning, after I post my entry, I have a tendency to tweak the site here and there. There’s always a little something that needs to be added, nipped, or tucked.

A few days ago, I stumbled across a site that is a Movable Type tweakers dream. It’s called empty pages. I can’t tell who the author of the site is. The only thing I’ve found were her initials when she posts a comment, which is BMK, but she is a very knowledgeable person, both in php and MT.

So this is a great site to find some cool tips, tricks, or scripts to add stuff to your weblog. Google brought me to the site after I did a search for adding page views to MT. I had tried various PERL and PHP scripts, but never quite found the right script. When I came across BML’s “Page Views” script, it was just what the doctor ordered! It was easy to install and after including the script on the navigation sidebar, it now provides a pageview count for each page on the weblog. I went back and tallied the page views from the server stats log for the major pages and I was done.

Once down the rabbit hole, you find more and more interesting little tweaks that you can do. Thanks to a helpful nammer in the MT Support Forums, I found another handy little script. Scriptygoddess wrote a script called “Show recent comments WITH total comments from that comment author” It’s a mouthful of a title, but a very simple script. What it does is show the total number of comments made by an author whenever they make a post. It’s a little thing, but I like it. 😀

Passing The Torch?

The Kiss Heard Around The WorldBy now you’ve no doubt heard about the big kiss between Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday of this week. In case you haven’t, here’s a quick run down.

For the first number of the evening, Britney and Christina began singing Like A Virgin dressed wedding dress-like attire. Clearly this was an homage to Madonna’s controversial 1985 performance. Part of the way through the song, Madonna comes out in grooms attire, singing her new song Hollywood. After writhing on both of them, she proceeded to give an open mouth kiss to Britney and then one to Christina. You can find stills here and the video here. It was all quite the shocking moment – a mainstay in Madonna’s career. 🙂

All scandalous behavior aside, I mean Madonna is old enough to be their mother, the overwhelming feeling I came away with was that Madonna was passing the skank torch. Madonna’s focus is now more on the spiritual life and on being a mother, not singing and writhing on stage. She’s done the sex thing and now she has matured, so it’s time for the new breed of shock vixens to take the stage. What better way to pass the skank torch than to give a lesbian kiss?

Weblogging With Your Palm

Mobile WebloggingAs everyone who reads this weblog must know by now, I love Palm OS handhelds. So, it was only natural that I would try and find a way to manage my weblog via my ever present pa1mOne Tungsten C, or one of the other Palm OS based devices that I carry with me. For managing my weblog, I use Movable Type, so most of my focus was on finding a solution for my specific weblog, but alone the way I found a couple other cool programs that can help you make your weblog mobile.

Web Browsers Weblogs are web based, so my first thought was to try using one of the many web browsers for Palm OS. I tried Blazer, Eudora Web, and the built in browsers for the Kyocera 7135 and the Tungsten C and none of them worked well enough for me to use them for my weblog. The biggest hurdle is that Movable Type makes use of pop up windows which no browser seems to support. Not only that, but it’s rather cumbersome trying to navigate the MT interface via such a small screen. The text entry is a dialog box, so it doesn’t really lend itself to entering a weblog post. In fact, while trying to edit a post, one of the browsers ended up deleting it entirely! :O Continue Reading

My Weight Is Going To The Dogs

Large Bathroom ScaleAs a child, I was always the smallest, skinniest one. Everyone was bigger than me. I’m not kidding, everyone. My father was 6 feet tall, so I kept waiting and waiting for this big growth spurt to happen so that I could tower over everyone I grew up with. High school came and went and no spurt. Then in college I figured I’d pretty much topped out at 5′ 10″ and that the spurt wasn’t ever going to happen. I was wrong. Since we’re three dimensional beings, growth can happen in many directions. My growth spurt did start in college, but instead of it making me grow vertically, I began growing horizontally. In other words, I started getting fat. 😛 Up until my senior year in high school, I was very active in soccer and other activities. Weight had never been a problem, so I could eat anything I wanted. Just before Christmas 1984 I broke both my knees (that a whole other story) and after that, I had to give up soccer and most activities involving running. I just couldn’t take the stress to the knees. So, after that accident my level of activity dropped significantly. When I was in college, I was either pounding the books, or sitting in a practice room playing my trumpet. Not a lot of activity, but I never really got too heavy, just a little out of shape. I’m Not Gay, But My TV Is

Gay TVMy television viewing habits have changed a lot this past year. Used to be that I was totally hooked on the Law and Order franchise and a few other shows on the major networks. Now it’s a whole different story, most of my TV viewing is done on cable channels and not on the 3 major networks. The reason is simple – the shows on cable networks is getting better. What I’m finding a little surprising is how my tastes are changing along the way – they are getting a little sexually bipolar.

The first Cable hook to set was 24 on Fox. From the first episode, I knew that I was going to watch every episode and I have. Since then I’m now an avid viewer of The Shield and Nip/Tuck on FX, but more recently, the Discovery Channel has nailed me with a series of hyper-hetero shows, Monster Garage, American Chopper, and Monster House. If that’s not enough, there’s a new show starting on Sunday called American HotRod that could easily be added to my list of faves. So where is the bipolar part come in? I’m glad you asked. 😀

Stroopwafel

StroopwafelI stumbled upon the stroopwafel some 10 years ago back in Baton Rouge. Coffee shops where just beginning to blossom around the United States and people weren’t quite sure what to make of them. In fact, I remember the first time I walked into Perks Coffee and Tea Shop and was shocked that I couldn’t order bacon and eggs. :O Like I said, people (including myself) were just learning what a coffee shop was all about. The idea of going someplace just for coffee seemed a bit strange.

Needless to say, I quickly got the hang of it and began visiting Perks on a frequent basis. What I discovered is that there was food to eat, just not the kind that comes off the griddle. 🙂 Bagels, muffins and other pastries were quite plentiful and good and made for a nice start on the day. There was also something new that I had never tried before – the Stroopwafel.

Men Are Dogs

A Married Dog And CatWhen I was a kid, I used to believe that dogs were male and cats were female. I thought that dogs and cats got married, just like people do, and when they had babies, they had puppies and kittens. I’m not making this up, I firmly believed this. When my parents explained to me that this was not the case, I was crestfallen. As a child, that belief was not just a whimsical thought, but a governing rule of the universe, just like gravity. Of course, I also still believed in the Easter Bunny. 🙂 With all the talk of integrating our cats with Gracie, it made me remember this childhood notion and I have to say, I think I was on to something.

I know that dogs and cats don’t marry and I know that they can’t reproduce should they try to mate, perish the thought. But the core of what I was saying is that dogs are the males and cats are the females. Think about it, men are like dogs. We’re not always the most hygenic. We want affection all the time. We love to play and we’ll do the monotonous task of chasing a ball for hours without getting bored. Women, on the other hand, are just like cats. They are more complex. They like affection, but on their terms. They groom themselves a lot and are more hygenic. They’ll play, but they get bored easy. Granted these comments are broad generalizations and there are exceptions to every rule, but you have to admit that this makes a little sense. 🙂
